ORCA!!!!

We saw Orcas!!! Lots of Orcas!!! The one thing I wanted to do before heading back to Wisconsin was to see Orca Whales and boy did we ever. We spent yesterday afternoon on Island Adventures Whale Watching Tour. We were right in the middle of K Pod. An Orca Pod that includes 22 whales including a new little baby Orca that is already about 6 feet long. We sat for about three hours in the midst of the Pod. Most of the Orcas were doing pretty deep dives (we think to catch salmon the staple of their diet). These Orcas are a resident Orca Pod and eat only salmon and other fish. As compared to Transient Orcas that will feast on other mammals including seals and even other smaller whales. The Resident Orcas need to consume about 200 pounds of salmon a day to keep their big bellies full. The middle photo with the 2 Orcas and Mt. Baker in the background is probably the best photo we took but doesn't do the experience justice. We saw quite a few breeches (when the whale jumps out of the water) which was AMAZING and lots of whales that were closer to the boat just playing in the water. We also got a glimpse of a Minke Whale that was playing with the an Orca Whale--something you almost never see because if it would have been a Transient Orca it would have devoured the Minke for dinner--craziness!
